Guro Tall Double Hornbill Elephant Top Mask – Ivory Coast
This is one of the finest quality Guro tribal masks I’ve ever found in 40 years of working in Ivory Coast. The execution is excellent from top to bottom. This is truly a very rare example of the art form albeit not at all traditional or ritual. It features a pair of hornbills face to face at the top, on top of an elephant head all of which is on top of a human Guro style face. The bottom is an elephant trunk and pair of tusks. Fanciful, imaginary, combining Guro imagery in a beautifully rendered carving.
